Undocumented Irish in the US may find reprieve
Mark | August 23, 2008In what could be good news for the estimated 25,000 undocumented Irish living in the US, Taoiseach Brian Cowen has stated that Ireland and the US may consider easing the immigration requirements of both countries. This came during Mr. Cowen’s departure speech from the US last week.
Such an agreement would basically allow much easier work visas for young Americans in Ireland, in exchange for certain concessions on undocumented Irish immigrants now in the US. These immigrants often find themselves unable to return to Ireland (to see family) attend funerals, etc.), as they’d most likely be refused re-entry into the US upon their return. For years now, the Irish government has been seeking a way to ease some of this hardship, although earlier methods were largely unsuccessful.
Hopefully, we’ll see some positive developments in this are in the not too distant future.
